President's Welcome

Andre Springs became the President of the BCGCA effective February 1, 2026. A native of Charlotte, North Carolina, Springs is a pioneering leader in collegiate golf and a lifelong champion of HBCU athletics.
In 1979, Springs became Head Golf Coach at Livingstone College, building one of the premier programs in the CIAA. Over 25 seasons, his teams captured seven CIAA Championships, three National Minority Golf Championships, and made seven NCAA appearances. His program also earned multiple CIAA Academic Awards. Springs is a five-time CIAA Coach of the Year (1986, 1987, 2015, 2022, 2025). He and his 1989 team earned a place in the Livingstone College Hall of Fame. In 2023, he and the 2015 team were honored with induction into the African American Golfers Hall of Fame.
A trailblazer beyond campus, Springs launched a minority youth golf clinic in 1987 to expand access to competitive golf. He later became the first black General Manager of Highland Park Golf Club in Cleveland, Ohio, and the first Black teaching professional at Birkdale Golf Club, where he caddied for Arnold Palmer during the club’s grand opening. He also served as the first Director of The First Tee of Lake Norman, NC.
Returning to Livingstone in 2010, Springs revitalized the golf program and later served as Athletic Director, leading the department to historic success, including two CIAA men’s basketball championships. He retired as Athletic Director in 2019 and continues to serve as Head Golf Coach and Special Assistant to the President for External Affairs.
Springs began his remarkable golf career at Fayetteville State University (FSU) in 1975, becoming the first freshman to win the CIAA Golf Championship. He received NAIA All-American honors, was FSU’s top freshman, earned MVP three times, and led FSU to four straight CIAA team championships. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1979 and was the first golfer inducted into the FSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990. The 1976 CIAA Championship team was inducted in 2023.
In addition to the FSU and Livingstone College Hall of Fames, Coach Springs has been inducted into the CIAA Hall of Fame, the African American Golfers Hall of Fame, Sports Wall of Fame by Mecklenburg County, HBCU Legends (NC), the National Black Golf Hall of Fame and the Black College Golf Coaches Association (BCGCA) Hall of Fame.
